What are Water Softeners?
Water softening is very simply a process that is used to turn hard water, which can cause damage and be a nuisance to work with, into soft water. In some areas there is often a large amount of minerals found in the tap water. These minerals are usually calcium and magnesium, although sometimes, an abundance of iron is also found in the water. These minerals can cause a lot of damage because they can create a lime scale buildup in pipes due to the extra minerals. If this buildup occurs, not only will the pipes become clogged but it may also prevent household appliances, such as the hot water tank, from running efficiently. Water softeners work to correct this problem by softening the water.
When a softener is used the harmful minerals are simply removed, making the water soft. These ions are then moved into a tank within the water softener, where they will be kept until they are drained away by the system. Also inside the system are ion exchangers. These exchangers are usually minerals such as sodium or potassium and they will be placed into the water when the harmful minerals are removed from the water supply. The ion exchangers are placed into the water softener as a form of salt and refilling this salt is really the only maintenance that a water softener usually needs.
Hard water can cause many problems. Not only can hard water cause a buildup of lime scale on your pipes, causing them to clog, but they also make it very difficult for soap and detergent. When hard water is used with these substances, it makes it especially challenging for the soap to dissolve. This could not only leave residue in your hair, but also on your dishes and laundry. What’s more, in cases where the water is especially hard, or the people using it are especially prone to it, hard water can cause things such as skin rashes. This is because the soap residue will be left on the skin and it will cause pores to clog.
Water softeners are not very expensive and they last a very long time. The most costly expense that you will find with a water softener is the cost of the replacement ions, or salt, and even this is very cheap. These machines also connect much like laundry machines, with simple in and out valves and a quick-connect installation technique. Water softeners are also very portable should you ever need to move, you know that you can take it with you. It’s true that if you have hard water, you will most likely a need a water softener. These small machines will save you a great deal of money, and a great deal of headache when dealing with hard water!
